You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. They don't understand it. Weve tried out a few singers. Its been a love-hate thing. David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. AD: I did eight albums with Frank, starting with Chunga's Revenge. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. PERRY: Yeah. I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. Less means more to the average person. That way, when I go on stage, there's no sloppiness. Im so glad you came. And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. On the third Journey album, I started using double bass drums. I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. I wasnt really into jamming too much. I love playing. [laughs] Youve gotta print my response. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. Yeah. AD: No, but Ludwig wants me to start doing clinics. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. AD: Oh yes. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. And lo and behold, all of a sudden you started hearin Lights on the radio. . And they laid down on each side of it and tried to pull sexy poses with the star. When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that. Everybody understood that. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. So February 1st was when I finally got home from the last shows, in Alaska. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band.
