DJ Setlist - Dec. 29 New Year's party at Cats

We had a New Year's party at Cats with a 1920's-1940's Hollywood theme, and it was nice to see everyone dressed up. Lisa made a really amazing Hollywood sign, and we took some group pictures. Can't wait to see them. Colin Perry's new group, the Houserent Serenaders, with the addition of a fiddle player, was amazing. I really liked their song selection. You could definitely hear some Stuff Smith in there. Happy New Year's everyone.

This week I paid tribute to two icons that passed away in November, Anita O'Day and Ruth Brown.

Une des légendes de jazz, Anita nous a ravi avec des performances
mémorables, telles les versions incroyables de "Let me off Uptown" et
"Opus One". D'ailleurs, son album "Let Me Off Uptown" avec Gene Krupa
est l'un des disques préférés de DJ Danny-O et de moi-même.

Anita, tu vas nous manquer.

ANITA O'DAY

October 18, 1919-November 23, 2006

Jazz Vocal legend Anita O'Day passed this morning November 23, 2006 at
6:17AM in West Los Angeles.
The cause of death was cardiac arrest according to her manager Robbie
Cavalina.

Born Anita Belle Colton in Chicago, Illinois on October 18, 1919,
O'Day got her start as a teen. She eventually changed her name to
O'Day and in the late 1930's began singing in a jazz club called the
Off- Beat, a popular hangout for musicians like band leader and
drummer Gene Krupa.
In 1941 she joined Krupa's band, and a few weeks later Krupa hired
trumpeter Roy Eldridge. O'Day and Eldridge had great chemistry on
stage and their duet "Let Me Off Uptown" became a
million-dollar-seller, boosting the popularity of the Krupa band.
Also that year, "Down Beat" magazine named O'Day "New Star of the
Year" and, in 1942, she was selected as one of the top five big band
singers.

After her stint with, Krupa, O'Day joined Stan Kenton's band. She left
the band after a year and returned to Krupa. Singer Jackie Cain
remembers the first time she saw O'Day with the Krupa band. "I was
really impressed," she recalls, "She (O'Day) sang with a jazz feel,
and that was kind of fresh and new at the time."
Later, O'Day joined Stan Kenton's band with whom she cut an album that
featured the hit tune "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine"

In the late'40s, O'Day struck out on her own.
She teamed up with drummer John Poole, with whom she played for the
next 32 years. Her album "Anita", which she recorded on producer
Norman Granz's new Verve label, elevated her career to new heights.
She began performing in festivals and concerts with such illustrious
musicians as Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Georg Shearing and
Thelonious Monk.
O'Day also appeared in the documentary filmed at the Newport Jazz
Festival in 1958 called "Jazz on a Summer Day", which made her an
international star.

Throughout the `60s Anita continued to tour and record while addicted
to heroin and in 1969 she nearly died from an overdose. O'Day
eventually beat her addiction and returned to work.
In 1981 she published her autobiography "High Times, Hard Times"
which, among other things, talked candidly about her drug addiction.

Her final recording was "Indestructible Anita O'Day" and featured
Eddie Locke, Chip Jackson, Roswell Rudd, Lafayette Harris, Tommy
Morimoto and the great Joe Wider.

A documentary, "ANITA O'DAY-THE LIFE OF A JAZZ SINGER" will be
released in 2007.

Double tristesse. Danny-O m'a introduit à cette chanteuse de RnB (the
original Rhythm and Blues, not what we know today as contemporary RnB
- deux styles différents), et en effet, je joue souvent la chanson
"Teardrops from my eyes" au soirée de Cat's les vendredis.

LOS ANGELES Nov 18, 2006 (AP)— Singer Ruth Brown, whose recordings of
"Teardrops in My Eyes," "5-10-15 Hours" and "(Mama) He Treats Your
Daughter Mean" shot her to rhythm-and-blues stardom in the 1950s, has
died. She was 78.

Brown, who later in life won a Grammy and a Tony, died Friday of
complications from a stroke and heart attack at a Las Vegas-area
hospital, said Lindajo Loftus, a publicist for the Rhythm & Blues
Foundation, which Brown helped establish.

"Ruth was one of the most important and beloved figures in modern
music," singer Bonnie Raitt said in a statement. "You can hear her
influence in everyone from Little Richard to Etta (James), Aretha
(Franklin), Janis (Joplin) and divas like Christina Aguilera today."

"She was my dear friend, and I will miss her terribly," Raitt said.

Brown's soulful voice produced dozens of hits for Atlantic Records,
cementing the fledgling record label's reputation as an R&B
powerhouse. Trained in a church choir in her hometown of Portsmouth,
Va., Brown sang a range of style from jazz to gospel-blues in such
hits as "So Long" and "Teardrops in My Eyes."

She later crossed over into rock 'n' roll with some success with
"Lucky Lips" and "This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'," a song she
co-wrote with Bobby Darin. [SNIP]

DJ setlist November 17, 2006 @ Cat's Corner from 9:30-12:30pm

Last night was good. We had our 20's charleston performance with Benoit, Sylwia, Alain, Caro, Ann and I, all dressed up. Spiffy. Unfortunately, the video footage might not be great. We'll see... And we forgot to take pictures. ack! But yes, the vests (debardeur for you alainf hehe) on top of dress shirts made all the difference.

I'm happy with my set last night. I DJed from 9:30pm to 12:30pm, so it was longer than usual, which gave me more time to pace myself and play stuff that I really wanted to play - especially the gospel and soul music - while at the same time putting in some good swingin' jazz.

DJ setlist October 27, 2006 Halloween @ Cat's Corner

The Halloween party was a blast. Omg. We spent the whole afternoon transforming the dance studio into a pirate ship deck, and I think it turned out beautiful. Ann is amazing with decorations! And... the most memorable part of the evening... the first ever Cat's Corner Tug-Of-War. I need pictures of this.. Please send the good stuff over if you have any pics of Dani with her recruits (Gab, Yoann and JF) against.. was it Alec and his team? Anyway. It was awesome.

As for the DJ-ing, I DJ'ed the second half of the Dixieband band breaks. They played such good music. Especially the slow dixie. SO GOOD. And Marie-Janelle was so lucky, her birthday jam was to live music. Lucky girl.

Finally.. music. I think I'm starting to get influenced by Peter Strom's soul party music. Hence the Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke.. although I forgot the CD I was going to play by Sam, "The Rhythm and the Blues"..

DJ setlist October 20,2006 @ Cat's Corner

October 20th, 2006 Cat's Corner 9:30-11:30pm

As you can see, I played a whole bunch of Mora... now if only we could teach dancers to do 20's charleston to Dixie music! Eric was not a big fan of the Johnny Hodges version of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", but I like it. Also, at some point during the night, I played "The Last Mile of The Way" by Sam Cooke followed by "It Takes Two to Tango" by Lester Young/Oscar Peterson after a fast song, but forgot to note down the order. My guess would be after "Mack the Knife" but I could be wrong. Maybe after the Kermit Ruffins song? Bah. The crowd loved "Cavernism", but I kinda scared away people with "Jingle Bells". Too early for Christmas, methinks. And yes, last time I DJed, I didn't like the fact that I only played one Basie song... but guess what, it happened again. Ack. I was so prepared to play One O'Clock Jump, but didn't. Another song that I really wanted to play was Ruthie Foster's "Runaway Soul", but that didn't happen either. Next time.
